3 Fun Mardi Gras Crafts for Your Aging Loved One

It’s not too early to start planning for Mardi Gras. Whether you’re planning a family gathering or a community-wide event, crafting is a wonderful way to share the happiness with your aging loved one. Here are a five simple crafts suggested by Boca Raton, FL, home care experts that you can design with your parent or grandparent this Fat Tuesday.

1. Party Favors

Start by collecting empty toilet paper tubes. Buy some green, purple, and gold tissue paper, contrasting ribbons, and assorted candies. Cut the paper into 12-inch squares and use one or more squares to cover each tube and fasten with tape. Tie a ribbon around one end, then fill the open end with your desired treats or small gifts and close it with another ribbon. Your loved one can use the favors as rewards for games or as place settings at the dinner table.

2. Noise Makers

For each noise maker, you will need two paper plates, a dowel, a pencil or similar object for the handle, decorating options, and dried beans or beads. Begin by decorating the outside of the plates any way your loved one wants. Add colorful streamers and put the plates together in the shape of a flying saucer. Slide the stick handle to the bottom of the plates and secure with staples. Continue stapling around the edge until you’ve reached the top. Leave an opening to add the beans or beads and finish stapling the edge.

3. Chic Masks

Remember to use an inexpensive eye mask for the base. Buy a few Mardi Gras-colored crepe paper streamers and cut into 10 to 15-inch lengths. Fold each strip in half and begin rolling into a rosette pattern while holding the bottom of the strip. Once complete, put a large dab of craft glue on the bottom or use a glue gun to attach a flower to the mask. It takes approximately 25 crepe roses to cover each mask. Embellish your loved one’s mask with a matching or contrasting feather and maybe some glitter.
